Green electricity and an income for the people of Otley

Community Turbine News Update

From Dec 1 2012 the feed-in tarrif will be 21p per KW/hr (Unit) plus a 4.5p export rate (electricity that is fed into the grid)
The proposed turbine is designed to generate 25,000 Units a year. This will provide an income of:

£5250 from the Feed-in tariff
£1125 from the export rate

These figures are indexed linked and will be paid for 20 years.
There will be costs associated with the turbine e.g. annual servicing, currently £450.
Therefore a conservative figure for funds for the community would be £5000+
OtleyGreen's preferred course is to obtain a grant for the purchase and installation of the turbine. Planning permission is a essential for any grant application to be successful.
OtleyGreen will continue to work with and be driven by the opportunity of providing significant benefits to the Otley community

Money for community initiatives is decreasing and things are likely to get worse. Otley could shield itself from these cuts by creating its own source of income that could support a range of community projects including further green initiatives.

OtleyGreen has received a very generous offer of land to build a community wind turbine. We believe that such a project is feasible and could be sited with negligible impact on the village. If successful it would raise thousands of pounds every year for the next 20 years for the Otley community. See where the money comes from here.

A project like this raises lots of questions. In order to gauge your views and answer questions we held a public meeting at Otley Village Hall on 9 March, 2011.
An exit poll resulted in a vote of 55% in favour, 45% against. About 20 of the people attending did not vote.
The report by OtleyGreen of this meeting has been published, and be read here.

During the meeting "Post it" notes were used for people to record their comments and make suggestions.  These, together with responses from OtleyGreen, have been collated and can be viewed here. Youa re also welcome to use the forum to post further questions and comments.
